Bryant: Board to name Watson leader

After receiving only one application for superintendent, the Andalusia City School Board is expected to install Ted Watson in the permanent position, Board Chairman David Bryant said.

The board was required to post the job for 30 days, which was up Monday, Bryant said.

Sara Mixson, ACS data collections secretary, confirmed that the system only received one application – from interim Superintendent Ted Watson, who was appointed to the position after former Superintendent Dr. Beverly McAnulty’s contract was amended in late May.

“I was really surprised that there was only one applicant,” Bryant said. “I guess the reason is because (it was posted) so close to school starting.”

The board will meet Monday night at 6 p.m. to discuss hiring Watson permanently.

State policy requires the board to fill the vacancy within 120 days, which ends on Sept. 24.

“Unless something changes, we are going to first discuss it,” he said. “We are more than likely going to act on it – unless someone’s mind changes. I see no reason the item would be tabled.”

Bryant said the board has been pleased with Watson’s performance as interim superintendent.

“I don’t know of anything that would prevent him from getting hired,” he said. “I don’t know that we’ll have all the contract worked out.”
