There’s a very good chance Red Level residents will have the opportunity to buy Halloween candy from the town’s new Dollar General store.

Mayor Mike Purnell said Friday, the store has a tentative opening date of Oct. 27.

“We got electricity and lights inside the building (Thursday) night,” Purnell said. “I’ve been told by the contractors that they will turn the building over to the (Dollar General) company on Oct. 20.

“I would imagine they will begin immediately stocking the shelves and getting ready to open,” he said. “Tentatively, the opening is set for Oct. 27, and the people of Red Level couldn’t be more pleased.”

Construction at the new retail store has gone very quickly after the announcement came in March that the town had been chosen as the store’s newest Covington County location.

The company will employ approximately six to 10 people, depending on need, to staff the 9,014 square-foot store, corporate officials said.

It is the first business to locate inside the town’s 32.5-acre industrial site on Alabama Highway 55. Purnell said the town is actively pursuing other retailers in an effort to generate more revenue.
