Let’s get this summer started

Published 12:00am Tuesday, May 31, 2011

For many students, last Thursday signified the last day of school until August, but today is the start of summer sports for me.

The Cal Ripken and Babe Ruth recreational leagues’ seasons will end this week, the 12-and-under Cal Ripken end-of-the-year tournament will wrap up tomorrow night at 7:30 at the Andalusia Sports Complex and the Stingrays swim team began its season with an intersquad meet on Saturday.

Additionally, Babe Ruth’s 13-15-year-old baseball league will continue to play games until June 13.

So what takes place next after the end of regular season ball?

All-Stars.

The coveted time of year when the leagues’ best get together to play other teams in the state for a chance at the title.

The biggest event that will take place this summer will be the 2011 12-and-under Softball World Series at the complex.

Teams from around the country will converge on the multi-field park during the second week of August.

It’s going to be a fun summer, and then before you know it, a new season of high school sports will begin.
