This year’s upcoming elections are on everyone’s mind – including members of the Covington County Commission, who on Monday, approved a resolution to “ensure integrity and security of the state’s voter registration and election management system.”

County Administrator Brenda Petty said the resolution was presented at the request of the Secre-tary of State’s office, the agency tasked with supervising the state’s election process.

“On a local level, the board of registrars oversees voter registration, and the probate office is in charge of elections,” Petty said. “That office is tasked with appointing someone to maintain and update street and precinct definitions within the system called the ‘Powerlock’ system. That person is the chairperson of the Board of Registrars, who is in Covington County.”

Locally, Virginia Merritt serves as the board of registrar’s chairman.

Before the meeting, Sammy Glover, a member of the Board of Registrars’, commented on voter registration numbers for the area’s upcoming elections. The first on the calendar will be the Aug. 28 municipal elections.

Glover said the majority of new registrants have come from graduating seniors and those moving into the county.

“We haven’t had a big increase of (new registrants) because of the municipal elections,” he said.
