Mom: Tisdale forgot a few things, too

Published 12:00am Wednesday, August 8, 2012

To the editor:

What I have to say to your readers is in response to John Tisdale’s recent letter. Is it not ironic how politics sometimes brings togetherness from those who were formerly dire adversaries?

Allow me to quote excerpts from May 2010 e-mails I received from Tisdale. “Earl Johnson worked with a vengeance to have me (John Tisdale) removed from the Downtown Redevelopment Authority which I helped form along with Mayor Barrow and Sid Fuller following the official designation of the National Historic District. Without so much as a ‘thank you’ from anyone representing the city for my investments in Andalusia since 1978 including millions of dollars/hundreds of hours in service to this community, Johnson declared me ineligible to serve. The city council actually believed him. It would not be good for me to participate (in a CHS program) expressing my opinions, many of which reflect poorly on the DRA’s current direction. Please help me pass it along that I will no longer offer any of my properties for free use to the public. You probably don’t know this, but up until now I have always worked with many of the non-profit organizations in Andalusia for causes including bake/yard sales, car washes, auctions, walk-a-thons, reunions, valentine sales, use of parking lots for recreation events. I just spoke to (name), withdrawing my offer for free use of the Prestwood building for art exhibits during the upcoming Andalusia Homecoming. I explained my current relationship with city hall which affected my decision. I suggested that she discuss her needs with the current administration explaining to them why she can’t use the building. Maybe they have property to donate.”

So is this a little confusing as to why Johnson’s political signs are located on Tisdale properties? We can only wonder if Johnson and Tisdale have some deal in the works? Is Tisdale’s uncontrollable anger taking over due to Blaine’s FB postings concerning the city’s unfair abatement of certain property – “What’s required of one owner’s unsightly property should be required of all.”

Through the years, I have always defended Tisdale’s ongoing efforts to restore downtown, have never doubted his passion, have had confidence in his intentions when no one else did.

When it comes to Tisdale’s criticism of our son, Blaine Wilson, a few things need to be brought to the public’s attention, so here goes.

The “silver spoon” comment – not exactly accurate. When Blaine was an AHS sophomore, his father worked for a local auto parts franchise distributorship that sold to another company, moving their headquarters to Montgomery. He faced a job crisis briefly. Blaine mopped floors at his part-time job thanks to grocer Hugh King. He also helped build sewing machines thanks to entrepreneur James Henderson. In lieu of pursuing an awarded LBW scholarship, he assisted his father in the electronics business for 10 years. He can definitely identify with the average working citizen. This experience actually helped Blaine to develop his present work ethic.

Blaine’s late grandmother was a widow who was employed at Southeastern Box and Funsten Pecans. She, like other fixed income households, had to worry about utility/ medicine bills. Wilson understands what many face.

Tisdale asks “What has Blaine Wilson done to improve Andalusia?”

After 9-11, Blaine attended the Alabama Criminal Justice Training Center, returning home to work in law enforcement helping to protect and serve the citizens of Covington County. We recall memorable headlines – “Sears burglary foiled” and “28 pounds of marijuana seized.” Officer Wilson worked Hurricane Ivan where Montezuma Activity Center residents were rescued from a collapsing building then transported across town to safety. Drug busts, domestic disturbances, auto accidents, vandalism, child molestation incidents, jail escapee hunts – risking one’s life that all law enforcement officers experience, part of the job.

During 2001-08, Blaine, with partners, started investing in blighted properties to remodel, rent, resell. Neighbors were appreciative. Tenants were fortunate to have found decent housing. With pride, he built several commercial storage/garage/office buildings which improved site appearances.

No, Blaine has not spent thousands of dollars like Tisdale, because unlike John, he does not have a “silver spoon.”

After purchasing WAAO (2008), Blaine has offered hundreds of hours, free air time, to various groups/individuals. He along with generous Andalusians raised an astounding $60,000-plus for victims’ families and promoted the Tuscaloosa tornado relief effort never to be forgotten.

In conclusion, Tisdale states he has developed Andalusia property for 44 years. The fact remains that very few of his buildings have been completed casting a shadow and distressing downtown occupants.

Now that I have reluctantly responded, let’s proceed to get on with the work of making Andalusia the best it can be. This is “Our Town!”

Are you expecting Andalusia to be surprised by this email that you have quoted? It is no hidden fact that John and Earl have butted heads. The matter of importance is that at the end of the day, they both hold the greater good of Andalusia as a top priority.

In your letter, you referred to domestic disturbances while mentioning Blaine’s contributions in law enforcement. I’m somewhat confused. Were you referring to domestic violence calls that Blaine was responding to or domestic violence calls that Blaine was personally involved in?

When speaking of Blaine’s past in real estate and mini storage, another concerning thought wondered through my head. In dealing with people, there are two types of relationships that expose the most about one’s true charachter. Those are familial relationships and business relationships. Does anyone else find it odd that Blaine’s former business partners openly support his opponent? Also, aside from his parents, I haven’t seen any public support coming from other family members.

I seriously doubt the new found alliance is for the greater good of andalusia, but instead for the good of themselves. Being that “blaineisnogood” is privy to the domestic violence report, maybr he or she is also knowledgeable about the police officers making copies of reports and posting on facebook. Have heard of any firings yet as I would thing that is probably a firing offense, but I guess they take care of each other. Bottom line is vote for who you like and quit all the mud slinging and dirty politics people.

Sorry for the delay in my response. It took me about 20 minutes to get over the headache caused by reading that jumbled mess of a paragraph. Disregarding my opinion on qualifications needed to cast a vote, I will leave your grammatical inadequacies out of this. On a more important note, voting for “who you like” is how uninformed, ignorant candidates get put into office. I “like” Bugs Bunny, though he wouldn’t receive my vote. What’s more important in an election like this are qualifications, education, ability, and proven success.

Domestic violence reports? I’m confused. Please share.

Sorry for your headache. I vote for the candidate I like after learning all there is to know about them. I have never voted with out finding out where they stand on the issues. Thanks, but I gotta go now, cartoons are coming on.

Apparently you haven’t learned all there is to know about Mr. Wilson. Your mind will soon be changed.

Momma Bear to the rescue again, and again, and again!

Come on Momma Bear, take Baby Bear off of Facebook long enough to speak to the voting public if he has personal experience with domestic violence. While he’s at it, he can explain his Barney Fife style “Citizen’s Arrest” of a State Senator; trashing crime scenes; pulling his gun on folks; and verbally trashing all sorts of people from the best little soap box Momma could buy.

Send him to “Time Out”, Momma Bear!!!!! As cousin Smokey the Bear might say, “Only You Can Stop Stupid”. Go Vote!

    Game On Baby Bear!

Pulling his gun? Are you kidding me? That’s a story the general public should know. I had been wondering why the city pulled his credentials with the police department. Thanks for clarifying.

Has anyone noticed that Candidate Wilson has defended his ridiculous platform until we were all blue in the face, but he is yet to defend himself against all of these criminal accusations? Maybe he thinks it’s just going to go away???

Proudamerican, great to see you back in the arena of public opinion. :) I always enjoyed your intelligent and articulate discussions of various topics pertinent to the local citizens. This election year is shaping up to be the most interesting one in my lifetime and I am watching and listening with rapt attention. I; like you, have great disdain for attacks on a candidates personal life and I hope this will not be the norm in these all too important elections. Looking forward to reading your take on future stories.

I, for one, am glad to see Blaine Wilson running against our incumbent, Earl Johnson. Many times opposition brings out information the public needs to know. If there’s no contest, there’s no discussion. Let the discussions continue! Keep it clean! Keep it honest! And may the best man win!

    Sue:

Have you noticed that lots of us have Earl Johnson signs in our yards. I guess by Sue’s logic, we are all under suspicion of doing back room deals and we must be up to no good with Mayor Johnson.

Here’s better logic. If you think “Stop the Sepnding” will work for City Hall; let’s all try it first with the businesses owned by the Bass and Wilson famalies. If they are successful after we stop spending with them, then we can try it at City Hall.

I say, “Stop the Stupid” – “GO VOTE”!

    TIAPOV:

Based on the current rotation of advertisements on WAAO, it appears that people are already stopping the spending with them. Sue seems to be very worried about those Earl signs. After the election, we will find that she is more worried about the lack of Bass Agency signs around town. For Sale signs, that is. I’m sure the other brokerages in town are enjoying the extra business.

“Miss Sue; she runs this town; she do!”

If Blaine were to pull a miracle, would we have another Bill/Hillary type of administration? Hillary did wear the pants!

Sue: Blaine, you can’t $top the $pending. The city will collapse.

    Blaine: But mommmmmmmmm….

While it sounds like a good idea, we simply can’t stop the spending. We can stop the unnecessary spending though. Springdale and guaranteed rentals are not required or sensible spending. Some claim sprindale is paying for itself, but on the city website it only shows about 10 scheduled rentals for the remainder of the year.

AS FOR SPRINGDALE PAYING FOR ITSELF IT IS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE. JUST AT THE ORIGINAL $900,000 ON A REPAYMENT SCHEDULE OF 15 YEARS WOULD COST THE CITY OVER $8000 A MONTH

    (Report comment)

  • whysuchtalk

TO BE EXACT $6657.19 A MONTH AT 4% IN JUST PAYMENT ALONE ON $900,000 FOR 15 YRS. I WOULD EXPECT THERE IS MORE MONEY INVOLVED WITH THIS PURCHASE AT CLOSING

Are Blame and campaign manager Mom really opposed to the purchase of Springdale and the cost of operating the facility? Mom publicly praised Mayor Johnson in writing as a visionary when the City purchased Springdale. Blame later decided he wanted to change jobs again, so for personal reasons he turned the purchase into a political hot potato in hopes of becoming Mayor.

Does this remind anyone of what Blame did to former Sheriff Anthony Clark just before Blame announced that he was running for Sheriff? Lots and lots of televised trash talk (no Facebook back then), and then Blame steps in as the guy in the white hat to run for Sheriff. How did that work out for you guys?

Blame, Blame, Blame …. not just Mayor Johnson, but City employees and private citizens that support Johnson. Can we get beyond all of this negative trash talk and get Blame to just tell the voters what he will do instead of what everyone else did wrong?

The Johnson signs say “Spend Nothing – Do Nothing – Have Nothing”, so unless Wilson has a new platform that we have not heard; I would say that is what we could expect for the next four years under Wilson as mayor. Do the voters understand that Andalusia has prospered through the greatest economic downturn since the Great Depression? The voters also need to understand that Wilson will create a local version of the recession for Andalusia just when the rest of the country is poised for recovery. Something to think about if you are one of those who thrive on drama and negativity.
