Christie Spurlin had nothing but positive things to say about her Opp Lady Bobcats volleyball team for the upcoming season.

The Lady Bobcats will open their season at the Kinston tournament on Sat., Aug. 25, and the team will be comprised of three seniors and seven juniors.

“We’ve worked hard,” Spurlin said. “They’ve practiced.”

Spurlin said she’ll be using the 6-2 defense, having two setters up front; and a 5-1 offensive set. Both sets are new for OHS, which the varsity squad learned at a rapid pace.

“It was (a hard transition), but the girls have got it now,” she said about the new sets. “We tried to do it at the Straughn tournament. They know their positions and know where they need to be.

“I think they’re going to be ready to go,” she said. “I’m really excited about this year.”

When asked why she was excited about the season, Spurlin said because of her “three seniors.”

“We gained a girl back who had been playing,” she said. “I think we’ve got a good team this year. They work well together. Hopefully, we’ll get to state this year.”

Opp’s setters this season are Caiden Harrell and Laiken Free, who are juniors.

Before the Lady Bobcats will be able to do that, they’ll have to go through the new Class 3A Super Regional.

” It’s going to be different this year,” Spurlin said about the Super Regional. “We really don’t know what to expect.

“I’m hoping it’ll be a lot better for us moving on up,” she said.

Opp is in Class 3A, Area 2 this season with Straughn and Excel. The Lady Bobcats have played Straughn before, but not Excel.

“It will be pretty competitive with us and Straughn,” she said. “Hopefully we’ll come out on top this year.”

Last season, Opp finished in the sub state round.

Spurlin said she hopes this team can go a bit further.
