Volleyball season starts today

Today marks the beginning of the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s volleyball season.

On a local level, Straughn, Red Level and Florala, along with Andalusia’s junior high squad kick the year off with matches.

Straughn will face Geneva at 4 p.m. today, where the Lady Tigers’ junior high team will play first and then varsity will play in the night cap.

Red Level and Florala will play a pair of varsity matches at FHS beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Andalusia’s junior high match against Dauphin at home starts at 4 p.m.

On Saturday, Andalusia, Pleasant Home and Opp travel to play in Kinston’s Set-Off Tournament, which begins at 8:30 a.m.

The Kinston tournament will start with pool play on two courts.

Pleasant Home and Opp are in Pool A, and Andalusia is in Pool B.

PHS will face Kinston to start pool play, and then Opp faces Houston Academy afterward. Opp then plays KHS, PHS will play Houston Academy, Kinston plays Houston Academy, and then Pleasant Home will play Opp in the final game of pool play.

Andalusia will play Providence Christian to start Pool B play. After AHS’ first game, Zion Chapel will face New Brockton, AHS will play ZCHS, Providence Christian will play New Brockton, AHS will play New Brockton and Providence Christian will face Zion Chapel.

The top two teams from each pool advance to the single elimination bracket round.

Additionally, Straughn will play in a tournament in Daleville. As of press time Wednesday, The Star-News didn’t have a bracket for the Daleville Tournament.
