Art Off the Wall to have Mediterranean flair

Art Off the Wall, the annual fundraiser for the Lower Alabama Arts Coalition (LAAC) and the Covington Arts Council now in its seventh year, will have new twists this year.
The event, called A Mediterranean Affair, is set for 6 p.m. next Sat., Sept. 15, at Springdale.
LAAC board member Barbara Tyler said Art Off the Wall will feature silent and live auctions, as always, but will have a more casual feel this year.
Guests will be greeted outdoors with live music as they arrive at Springdale, and directed indoors where they’ll have an opportunity to bid on artwork contributed by more than 25 area artists.
Those who have agreed to donate pieces to the silent auction include Derrick Bass, Kim Baumgartner, Zoe Birk, Joni Brannon, Dot Burkett Tara Dalton, Tonya Davis, Katherine Grantham, Peggy James, Jo Kelley, Walter Moore, Barbara Nichols, MaryAnn Norton, Ange Petty, Carol Phillips Misti Purvis, Lonnie Rich, Curtis Simpson, Lori Smith, Maria Thigpen, Mary Lynn Thorington, Jessica Tyler and Debbie Weant-Lane.
A wine and cheese bar will be set up in the courtyard, and there will be passed h’ordoeurves indoors.
Outdoors, there will be Mediterranean buffet fare catered by Candy Duke and Lisa Scruggs, with al fresco dining, entertainment, and a live auction.
Entertainers include Christian Wossilek; Paula Sue Duebelt; Jason Gunter; a comedian from North Alabama, Don Reeves; and Dixieland jazz by the Dixie Dandies, are Josh Sheffer, trumpet; Savannah Ricks, clarinet; Ralph Purvis, trombone; Richard Rhea, bass; Spencer Rhea, drums; and Steve Hubbard, keyboard. Trippy McGuire will emcee and Dr. Phil Hardee will conduct the auction.
Live auction items include “an interesting furniture piece” from Kelley Faulkner; a piece of art that is a collaboration by Roger, Cathy, Allyn and Lauren Powell; and other art.
“This is all about supporting all of the arts,” Covington Arts Council board member Denise Brooks said. “We want everyone to come and just have fun.”
Transportation will be available for those who aren’t able to walk down the drive at Springdale, Brooks said.
Tickets are $35 per person, and are available by leaving a message at the LAAC, 222-3205. Tickets will be delivered. They also will be available at Ansley Place and Brooks Hardware next week.
