Bomb threat causes OHS evacuation Friday

Students at Opp High School were evacuated from the school Friday morning after a bomb threat was called in to the school.

The incident occurred after 10 a.m., and classes resumed before noon.

Opp City Schools Superintendent Michael Smithart confirmed the incident, but said that students resumed the normal school day.

“We had a very benign incident where an idiot with nothing better to do elected to disrupt the educational process for our students,” he said. “Our administrators took the appropriate steps to secure our students.”

Law enforcement officials from the Opp Police Department and fire fighters secured the building before students were allowed back inside.

“We want to thank the (OPD), the Covington County Sheriff Department, local ABC officers and the Drug Task Force for their assistance.”

Officials at the Opp Police Department would not release any further details as of press time Friday.

The Star-News will update its readers when more information becomes available.
