Straughn Elementary third grader Taj Patel of Andalusia Isshinryu Karate won first place medals in weapons and sparring at the West Georgia Invitational Tournament at the East Carroll Gym Complex on Sept. 8, in Carrollton, Ga.

The tournament is affiliated with the Georgia Karate League Tournament series.

Additionally, Patel finished second in kata of the intermediate divisions in his age group.

Patel is a purple belt and has been studying Isshinryu karate for more than two years.
