A former Atmore corrections officer was found guilty of drunk driving Tuesday.

Rufus Evans III, 46, was arrested Jan. 29 by Alabama State Trooper Matthew Kennedy at a safety checkpoint. The day-long trial featured testimony from law enforcement and medical personnel, as well as two of Evans’ friends who were with him prior to his arrest. Testimony also revealed that Evans had three children, two of whom were his own, in the vehicle with him at the time of his arrest.

The jury, which was comprised of seven women and five men, also found Evans guilty of improper lights. Evans was represented by Riley Powell.

“I’m very pleased with the jury’s diligence,” said Assistant District Attorney Lee Enzor.

Circuit Judge Lex Short will sentence Evans on Dec. 19.
