EARL RAY ‘HOT ROD’ WALDEN

Earl Ray “Hot Rod” Walden, 67, of Red Level, passed away Tues., Oct. 23, 2012, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held today, Thurs., Oct. 25, at 2 p.m., at New Home Baptist Church with Keahey Funeral Home directing and the Rev. Charles Mitchell and the Rev. Cliff Morris officiating. Special music will be provided by J. L. Walden, J.C. Walden and Randy Walden. Interment will follow in the New Home Baptist Church Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Jane Mitchell Walden of Red Level; daughters, Annette (Jeff) Etheridge of Pall, Ala., and Tammy (Marcus) Boatwright of McKenzie; three sisters; six grandchildren, Eric (Jennifer) Odom, Dusty (Heather) Odom, Tess (Jr.) Merrit, Andrew (Caitlin) Nixon, Tristan Taylor and Tatum Taylor; and five great-grandchildren, Rand Odom, Ryder Odom, Kayden Odom, Kyle Nixon and Aidan Merritt, and on the way are Karson Odom and Levi Nixon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Allie Mae and William Ray Walden, and his brother, Charles Walden.

Pallbearers will be Eric Odom, Dusty Odom, Andrew Nixon, Tristan Taylor, Robert Mitchell and Billy Bishop. Serving as a honorary pallbearer will be his granddaughter, Tatum Taylor.

ROBERT TURNER JOHNSON

Robert Turner Johnson, 92, of Andalusia, died Mon., Oct. 22, 2012, in Andalusia.

Funeral services will be held today, Thurs., Oct. 25, at 10:30 a.m., from the Foreman Funeral Home Chapel with interment following in the Andalusia Memorial Cemetery. The Rev. Herb Carlisle will officiate. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Foreman Funeral Home.

He is survived by his daughter, Janet Johnson of Birmingham; a sister-in-law, Sue Johnson of Greenville; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Lorraine Johnson.

He moved to Andalusia in 1946 and opened Johnson Brothers Jewelry Store. He continued in business until his retirement in 1984. He was a veteran of World War II, a member of the First Baptist Church, a former member of the Andalusia Rotary Club and a member of the Board of Directors of CCB Community Bank for 41 years.

Pallbearers will be Frank King, Dr. Bill King, Riley Taylor, John Taylor, Frank Moore and Wem Mellown.

AMANDA ‘MANDY’ BRADLEY

Amanda “Mandy” Bradley, 35, of Pensacola, Fla., formerly of the Andalusia area, died Mon., Oct. 22, 2012, in a Nashville, Tenn., hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Fri., Oct. 26, at 10 a.m., at Foreman Funeral Home with the Rev. Terry Campbell, the Rev. Clyde Northop, the Rev. Robert Bradley and the Rev. Larry Stewart officiating. Interment will follow in the Salem Cemetery.

Visitation is tonight at 5 p.m. at Forman Funeral Home.

She is survived by her husband, Chris Bradley, and her three children, Sara, Emily and Evan, all of Pensacola, Fla.; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Williamson; her brother and sister-in-law, Josh and Angela Williamson; her paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Billy Williamson, all of Andalusia; her in-laws, the Rev. and Mrs. Robert Bradley of Brewton; sister-in-law, Amy Smith of Panama City, Fla.; and five nieces and nephews, Isabella and Ivy Williamson and Taylor, Summer and Mikey Smith.

Pallbearers will be Lloyd Bradley, Danny Cox, Jacob Cox, Terrance Williamson, Rodney Cox and Taylor Smith.

BARBARA JUNE DEFENO

Barbara June Defeno, 82, of Andalusia, died Tuesday October 23, 2012 in the Andalusia Manor.

Graveside services will be at 2 PM October 26th at the Andausia Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Larry Stewart officiating and Foreman Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be at 1 PM Friday at Foreman Funeral Home.

Survivors include her son, Richard Defeno, Jr. of Carmal, NY, her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Mike Howell of Carmal, NY, six grandchildren, two step grandchildren.

EUNA KELLEY FAULKNER

Euna Kelley Faulkner, beloved mother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away at her home on Oct. 22, 2012, at the age of 96.

She was born in Montgomery on Jan. 12, 1916, the sixth of nine children born to Walter B. and Alma Moses Kelley. When she was 1 year old, the family moved to the Harmony Community near Andalusia where she attended elementary and high school years at Straughn.

She lost her husband, Melvin, in 1996 after 59 years of marriage. After high school, both worked at the Alatex, the garment factory in Andalusia, and met when Melvin’s mother became her supervisor. In 1937, she and Melvin married in the Covington County Probate Judge’s office; it was payday, affording Melvin the money for a marriage license. Later, she worked at Brooks Walgreen Drug Store, enjoying her work as soda fountain manager along with her sister, Frances, who was the head cashier. She also loved her next job with Andalusia Bakery owned by the Brunson family.

During World War II, while Melvin served in the Navy Seabees, she lived in Norfolk, Va., where she worked in a café and then in Hayward, Calif., where she worked in a local bakery. At Cottage Bakery each afternoon when fresh pies came out of the oven, the owner, Mrs. Fredericks, prompted her to tell customers, “We have hot apple pie,” because she delighted in hearing Euna’s southern drawl linger on the word “pie.” Mrs. Fredericks liked Euna so much that she set up an apartment for her and Melvin in her home.

After the war, the couple traveled and enjoyed the beauty of California for almost a year. They then returned to Andalusia where they raised their two children, Ann and Jimmy.

Once both children were in school, the two purchased the Dairy Queen in 1957. Euna managed the business during the day, working solo until two high school students relieved her in the afternoon. Through the years, Euna hired and trained many high school students who later returned to say “thank you” for her example and guidance. After Jimmy took over the business in 1971, Euna still loved being involved at the Dairy Queen that she had nurtured for 14 years.

Everyone who knew Euna would testify to her love of people and life. She easily struck up conversation with everyone she met. Often described as “the life of the party,” Euna loved to dance, and she counted on all events being fun. Daughter Ann remembers that her high school friends requested Euna as the first-choice chaperone for beach trips. At family reunions, Euna was a favorite storyteller of her brothers’ and sisters’ childhood escapades on the farm. Just before her 95th birthday, Euna was still dancing a few steps of the “Charleston” holding on to her walker.

During her working years, Euna was an active member of the Business and Professional Women’s Club and the Altrusa Club, a civic organization of women business leaders. Once she retired, Euna served as a hospital volunteer, a job that she cherished. Clearly, she was happiest when she was helping others – taking food to those who were sick, putting flowers at gravesites that had none, and sending cheerful words to those who were down.

Euna shared a passion for fishing with her husband Melvin. At their house on Gantt Lake, they spent many pleasurable hours in Melvin’s little boat catching fish and then hosting fish fries for friends and family. Even into her 90’s, Euna still got excited about a chance to throw her fishing pole into a pond.

Joining the First Presbyterian Church in 1946, Euna and Melvin were active members through the years. After she became house bound, the visits, flowers, and well wishes from the church family meant a great deal to Euna.

She is survived by her daughter, Ann Faulkner Bevino, and husband, Frank, of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; her son, Jimmy Faulkner, his wife, Kelley, and their daughters, Heather (Pete) Sabey of Toms River, N.J., and Brooke Stinner, Hope (Steven) Salter and Allison Vuyovich, all of Andalusia; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Frances K. Hall of Niceville, Fla.; brother, Charles R. Kelley, and his wife, Sarah, of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; her brother-in-law, Ralph Faulkner, and Beverly, of Salem, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews in a loving extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; her parents, Walter and Alma Kelley; sisters, Grace Kelley, Caudie K. Merritt and Lottie K. Lloyd; and brothers, Ray Kelley, Roy J. Kelley, and Ernest J. Kelley.

The family wishes to express appreciation to Dr. David McCalman and his staff for their attentive care of Euna through the years; to Edwin May, April Williams, Sonja Grimes and everyone at Comfort Care Hospice of Andalusia; and to her personal caregivers, Alana Ball, Betty Ferrell, Jean Norris, Vera Pope, Jean Porter, Florine Smith, Ruby Parker, Devin Jones and Margaret Elmore for their devoted and loving care.

Services will be held today, Thurs., Oct. 25, at 1 p.m., at Andalusia’s First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. David Jamison officiating and Foreman Funeral Home directing. Interment will follow in Andalusia Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will begin in the church Fellowship Hall at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would greatly appreciate remembrance contributions to First Presbyterian Church of Andalusia, Outreach Fund, 223 South 3 Notch St., Andalusia, AL 36420.
