Council to name River Falls mayor Monday

Published 12:23am Wednesday, October 31, 2012

History will be made Monday in River Falls as the town appoints its first new mayor in more than 30 years.

Earlier this month and after being elected to another term, former mayor Mary Hixon pleaded guilty to stealing more than $200,000 from the town. As a condition of her plea agreement, Hixon agreed to resign the post she’d held for more than three decades, as well as to testify against any accomplices.

On Mon., Nov. 5, a new town council will be sworn in by Probate Judge Ben Bowden.

Councilwoman Mattie Freeney said meeting agendas were posted at Wages Market, which is also the site of the Monday meeting; town hall and at the River Falls post office.

“Our first act of business will be to appoint a new mayor,” Freeney said. “From what we know now, the rule states that the five councilmen will choose the replacement.”

Freeney said also on the agenda is the hiring of a new city clerk and other city workers, as well as discussion on city finances and the water system.

“We’re still working to move the town forward,” she said.
