Community Christmas to help 550

A late Thursday registration has the number of Andalusia Community Christmas angels at 550, organizer Larry Avery said Friday.

Turnout at first registration for the organization that provides Christmas gifts for local needy families on Saturday drew 400 area children. Avery said since turnout was low, a second session was needed.

Those “angels” will be out for adoption later next week, he said.

“We are again encouraging folks to spend at least $60 on each ‘angel’ adopted,” Avery said. “Purchases of clothing, books, and toys are suggested.”

Each year, the group also gives away bicycles to more than 100 children. Recipients are selected in a drawing. Avery said 150 bicycles were ordered for this year’s event, which will be held on Dec. 14 at the Kiwanis Center.

Donations, which are also being accepted for those who don’t wish to shop for a Christmas angel, are tax-deductible and should be mailed to Andalusia Community Christmas Inc., P.O. Box 1525, Andalusia, AL 36420.
