River Falls council: Businesses will pay license fees

Beginning in January, those doing business in River Falls will be required to have a business license.

Town council members agreed Tuesday the town needs the revenue generated from license issuances.

Councilman Gary Wages said he was told by the town’s previous mayor, Mary Hixon, that the city passed a resolution “six or eight years ago” waiving the license fees; however, no resolution could be found.

Wages presented an undated ordinance that established licenses fees. Wages said Hixon gave him the ordinance but it is unknown when, or if, it was properly adopted.

Council members must now decide if a new updated ordinance is required.

“We need to make sure we are doing all we can,” Wages said. “Everyone who does a business must get a license. That’s how it is.”

The council also agreed they’d like to see an ordinance adopted establishing the guidelines for yard sales.

The council is expected to take up the matter at its next meeting.
