Some 40 runners and walkers braved the cold weather at the Cat Scat 5K Walk/Run to help raise funds for the Wildcats’ cheerleading squad.

“For our first year, I felt like we didn’t have any major mishaps,” said Florala assistant cheer coach Melissa White. “It went really well.”

The fundraiser took place on Saturday at Florala’s Lake Jackson State Park. Monies will be used to help pay for Florala High Cheerleader uniforms, and in the long run, a chance to compete at the state cheer competition in Hanceville.

White said she noticed that there were more out of town competitors, noting that one couple had traveled from Pensacola, Fla., to race.

Next year, the race will more than likely be held in October, instead of December, as “It was a little cold,” White quipped.

The overall male runner winner was Travis Shaw, who ran the 5K in 21 minutes, 27 seconds.

The overall female runner winner was Sandy Ebanks, who ran the 5K in 21:57.

The overall male walker winner was Ken Smalewich, who walked in 32:58.

The overall female walker winner was Leah Morris.
