The Straughn Tigers girls’ team took home the Red Level Christmas Tournament championship trophy on Saturday night, cruising to an easy 52-25 over the Lady Tigers of Elba.

Straughn had all facets of their game working to perfection, and led for the entirety of the championship bout.

Katelyn Kinsaul got a fast-closing defender off her feet with a nice pump fake, then took one dribble before knocking down an easy jumper to give Straughn a 10-4 lead in the first period.

Taylor Wood then made her second consecutive basket with a put-back lay in as the first quarter buzzer sounded to extend her Tigers’ lead to 16-8 after one.

Tournament MVP Brittany Driver then started a 13-1 run to open the second quarter with an “and-one”, followed by a Jacie Williamson three-ball and another Driver jumper to push Straughn’s lead to 27-9.

Straughn took a 34-18 lead into the half, but they weren’t done scoring just yet.

Paige Taylor got hot to begin the third quarter, scoring six straight points coming on two made shots from the charity stripe followed by consecutive layups.

After more heavily contested baskets beneath the rim by Driver and Kinsaul, Straughn opened up a 47-20 lead at the end of three quarters.

Straughn really established their dominance during the third quarter, outscoring Elba 13-2.

The fourth quarter was played with a running clock to help ease Elba’s bleeding, but the girls from Straughn weren’t slowing down at all.

They opened up the final period of action on a 5-0 tear and wound up winning handily, 52-25.
