One of Opp’s own will come home next month for the annual Chamber of Commerce banquet.

Jamey DuBose, a 1988 Opp High School graduate who gained fame for his coaching stint at Prattville High School, will be the guest speaker.

DuBose earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Troy University and has coached at Eufaula, Opelika, Ashville, Alma Bryant, Gadsden and Susan Moore before joining the PHS coaching staff in 2004 as the offensive coordinator.

While at Prattville, the Lions played for the AHSAA Class 6A state championship in 2004, and it won in 2006 and 2007.

DuBose took the reigns as the head football coach and athletic director of the Lions in 2008.

During his first year as head coach, his team won the 6A state championship and became one of only three teams to ever three-peat in the 6A state championship.

His teams also finished runner-up in 2009 and won a fourth state championship in 2011.

Some 84 athletes coached by Dubose went on to play at the collegiate level.

DuBose took the head coach position at Florence High School in 2012, and took the Falcons to their first trip to the playoffs in four years.

He had eight players sign college scholarships. Six of the eight were with Division I schools.

DuBose and his wife, Tracey, together have four sons, Mason, Ryley, Lance and Austin.

The banquet will be held Thurs., May 9, at 7 p.m., at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at the Opp Chamber of Commerce.
