Dozier: To police or not police?

The Town of Dozier is currently without a police officer, town officials confirmed Friday.

Former Police Chief Terry Mears resigned on March 22, City Clerk Ann Holland said.

Mears had served as the chief of police since December 2008.

Currently, all calls are being routed to the Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Department.

Holland said Friday that the town council is expected to decide at its Monday night meeting whether to employ a new officer, or let the Crenshaw County Sheriff’s Office take over patrol.

At the last Crenshaw County Commission meeting, commissioners discussed the possibility of hiring another deputy at Sheriff Charles West’s request to help cover the Dozier area if a new policeman was not hired.

The town boasts a population of 329, according to the 2010 Census and has a handful of businesses, including the First National Bank of Dozier, a convenience and package store, restaurant, medical clinic and a building supply store.

The council will meet Monday night at 6 p.m.
