Opp council debates mileage

High gas prices and the need to check on residents and issues sparked discussion at the council workshop about whether council members should be reimbursed for mil-eage.

Councilwoman Mary Brundidge asked if it were possible because gas is high after Councilman Mike Booth asked if he would be reimbursed for travels out of the city for business.

City Clerk Connie Smith said she thought it was OK for the council to be reimbursed for expenses because its pay is for the council meeting.

“But let me find out for sure,” she said.

Councilman Arlin Davis said mileage wasn’t something he was reimbursed for in his previous terms.

“I can’t see paying you to run around,” Mayor John Bartholomew said.

Brundidge stated that parts of her district were across town. Other council members have the same issue.

“Gas wasn’t that high then either,” Brundidge said to Davis.

Davis said he would not ask the city to pay his bill.
