School may be just weeks away from dismissing for summer break, but two of the three school systems have already set their calendars for the next school year.

Students will return to school Aug. 19 in the Andalusia City and Opp City School systems.

Both systems will attend school only 178 days, but have enough hours in the school day to meet the 1,080 hours of instruction required.

“We have enough hours embedded into our school day to make this work,” ACS Superintendent Ted Watson said. “The first semester will only be 540 hours. If our teachers think this will not work, we can add time to the day, but we are within state guidelines.”

Both systems will follow identical calendars with the exception of ACS having built in two half days for parent-teacher conferences, which are scheduled on Oct. 2 and Feb. 26. OCS will end its school year on May 23 and ACS on May 22.

Students will receive the following vacation days:

• Sept. 2 for Labor Day;

• Nov. 11 for Veterans Day;

• Nov. 27 through Nov. 29 for Thanksgiving;

• Dec. 23, through Jan. 3, for Christmas;

• Jan. 20 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day; and

• March 24 through March 28 for spring break.

Covington County Schools will approve its calendar at its May meeting.

Staff members are currently reviewing proposed calendars to decide which works best for the system.
