Officials are questioning how some 20 road signs came to rest below the Falls Road bridge in River Falls.

River Falls Mayor Patricia Gunter said the signs – the majority of which were road names and bridge weight limit signs – were found Tuesday morning.

Covington County Sheriff’s Office investigator Ted Motley said when caught, those responsible for stealing the signs could face a felony theft of property charge.

County engineer Darren Capps said the stealing of road signs is nothing new in the county.

“It happens daily somewhere,” Capps said. “Of course, not that many. Sometimes there is a specific area that people target, and you can see where they pushed (the sign) over with a vehicle or a 4-wheeler. Sometimes, you can see the street name signs are bent where people tried to remove them.”

Capps said there are four road signs that are constantly stolen – Over Yonder Road, Dragstrip Road, Straughn School Road and Easy Street.

“It’s the catchy ones that get stolen a lot,” he said.
