New LBW program helps fulfill mission

A new program being offered at LBW Community College this fall fulfills one of the original missions of community colleges in Alabama.

Community and technical colleges always were designed to give Alabamians greater access to education. Now, LBW is tailoring an evening program for people who want to pursue a degree while working fulltime at a day job.

The program allows students to earn a degree by committing two nights a week for two years in a specific curriculum.

While any student can take any course offered at night, the college hopes to allow working adults to proceed uninterrupted toward a degree in a way that is cost effective for the college. There is much less chance of evening classes being cancelled due to low enrollment with this plan, college officials said.

The program has two tracks, both leading to an associate’s degree. One track is a four-semester sequence of classes for college-ready students, with the second track designed for students who need developmental courses and additional time and extends one additional semester.

Most of the courses have both on-campus and on-line components.

This is a great opportunity for non-traditional students who want to further their education. For more information or to find out how to get started, call John Bess, program success coordinator, at 334-881-2254.
