Covington County wasn’t about to give up despite a 4-1 deficit to Opp on Sunday in the 10U Babe Ruth State Softball Championship.

CC scored seven runs in the final three innings and beat the Lady Bobcats 8-6 to claim the state title at the Dwight Mikel Athletic Complex.

Their championship game was moved to Sunday morning because of the late surge of storms that swept through the area Saturday night.

Covington County’s Sydney Arnett went 1-for-3 with a single; and Emilee Waite went 1-for-2 with a single. Ava Bailey scored four of her team’s runs.

On the mound, Arnett threw a heck-of-a-game, striking out 12 batters in the complete game. She allowed six runs on multiple hits.

Covington County and Opp (with the runner up finish) qualify for the 10U Southeast Regional Babe Ruth Softball Tournament in Glen Allen, Va., in the middle of next month.

The Star-News will update its readers on whether or not either team will be going to the regional tournament.

On Saturday, Andalusia’s 8U and 12U Babe Ruth Softball All-Stars fell in their respective championship games.

Opp beat Andalusia 7-3 to claim the 8U tile, while Tri County demolished the Lady Bulldogs 14-2 in the 12U age group.

To earn a spot in the state championship game, the Lady Bobcats beat Covington County 27-5 in 8U action. Andalusia beat Brewton twice 14-6 (in bracket play) and 17-7 in pool play to reach the championship.

In 12U action, Andalusia beat Covington County 9-3 in bracket play.
