SHS, OHS highlight tonight’s matches

We are in a for a night of good local volleyball action.

Three matches highlight tonight’s play — Andalusia versus Hillcrest-Evergreen, Florala versus Samson and Opp versus Straughn.

Andalusia needs an area victory over Hillcrest-Evergreen badly after falling in three straight sets to Monroe County last week.

Luckily, the Lady Bulldogs have a little momentum going into tonight’s match after winning their first match of the season in a 3-2 victory over Kinston Tuesday night.

Florala’s match against Samson is a regular season contest, and I’m sure the Lady Wildcats are looking for a win. It would be great to see them pull out a win at home.

However, the match of the night — in my opinion — is Opp’s area home match against Straughn.

The Lady Bobcats and Lady Tigers are both 1-0 in Class 3A, Area 2 after each got a win over Excel earlier this season.

SHS enters tonight’s contest with a 5-0 record. Opp’s at 8-1.

Both walked away with regular-season wins Tuesday night against Elba and New Brockton.

I’ve only had the ability to see each team play once this season.

For Opp, it was an early season contest against rival, Andalusia. For Straughn, it was against Excel.

Both have great service games when needed and each touts a decent setting skill, especially in the middle of the line up.

I admit, I know little about the sport even though I’ve been covering the sport for more than five seasons.

Hint: basketball is the same way.

I think it’s going to come down to who will make the least amount of errors, and the team that executes the game plan.

Games will start at 4 p.m. today with the junior high bunch. Junior varsity will follow the first match and then varsity will get going in the night cap.
