Cops: Shooting suspect sought

An Opp man – a bystander at an Andalusia gathering spot – was in the wrong place at the wrong time Saturday night when he was shot in the abdomen.

Andalusia Police Department’s Sgt. Jody Scott said the shooting occurred just before midnight at the 532 Club on South Cotton Street. Neither the victim nor the shooter is being identified as the investigation continues, Scott said.

“But what I can say is that they were having a gathering when a physical altercation occurred inside the building and spilled out onto the street at the corner of South Cotton and Little streets,” he said. “He was standing on Little Street. He wasn’t a part of the altercation, but he was wounded when gunshots were fired by, at this time, an unknown suspect.

“He was transported by personal vehicle to Andalusia Regional Hospital, where he was stabilized,” Scott said. “He was then sent to the University of South Alabama hospital in Mobile, where he was set to be released Monday afternoon.”
Scott said charges are pending in the case.

“I believe I know the identity of the suspect, so I would say an arrest could be forthcoming,” he said.

Scott said officers have responded to several incidents of fighting by juveniles, as well as underage drinking.

“This is a place that people can rent,” Scott said of the property. “At one time, they did use off-duty police officers as event security, and during that time, no real altercations occurred. Then, they decided to not use off-duty officers and the altercations began occurring.”
