What’s the best way to help raise money for the Red Level Tiger’s biggest fan, who is battling debilitating illness?

Why, a tailgating party, of course!

On Saturday, that’s what the Red Level community will do to fundraise for Debbie Foley-Russell. A 1981 RLHS graduate, Russell has been confined to a wheelchair since childhood, “but please don’t think this slows her down,” said friend Rita Kaye Nearor.

“If anything, it’s given her the speed and mobility that most people wish they possessed; however, over the last several months, Debbie has been unable to work due to sickness, and it was decided that there was no better way to give back to the woman who has given so much of herself to the community.”

Russell, who has worked as an environmental planner for the Conecuh National Forest, is currently undergoing antibiotic therapy.

“Someone told me that it wasn’t hard to want to help someone who has done so much for many,” Nearor said. “Debbie is definitely not discriminatory when comes to assisting with fundraisers. She has donated and raised money for football, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, band, cheerleaders, well, I’m sure you get the picture.”

On Saturday inside Crystal Springs Park, and beginning at 9 a.m., there will be arts and craft vendors, food, entertainment, a host of children’s activities and a live auction.

The Dozier Volunteer Fire Department is taking orders for Boston butts to be delivered the day of “the great tailgate,” Nearor said. Cost is $25. There will also be a Yeti cooler raffle, with tickets $5 each or five for $20.

There is an account set up at the people’s Bank in Red Level. One can send any donations to The Debbie Foley Russell Benefit Fund, The address is P.O. Drawer F, Red Level, AL 36474.

“It’s going to be a great time for a great cause,” Nearor said.
