Locals excel in Huntingdon sweep

Scoring 18 runs wasn’t a problem for Huntingdon’s softball team on Wednesday.

The Lady Hawks defeated Covenant in Lookout Moutain, Ga., 10-1 in five innings for the first game, and took the second game 8-0 in six.

With these victories, Huntingdon compiled its fifth sweep in eight USA South Athletic Conference doubleheaders this season.

Leading the charge in the first game was former Straughn/LBWCC standout Katy Messick (6-2), who allowed three hits and one earned run while striking out four in five innings for the win.

Former Straughn/LBWCC standouts Tiffany Taylor and Kaitlynn Wiggins also had good days for the Lady Hawks.

Taylor had an RBI and scored two runs, and Wiggins had an RBI triple and scored one run.

AC Riley, a former Andalusia/LBWCC standout scored one run.

Huntingdon (17-10, 13-3) scored nine runs in the fifth inning to break a 1-1 tie in the first game.

In game two, the Lady Hawks scored one run each in the first and third innings; five runs in the fifth; and one run in the sixth.

The Lady Hawks will be back in action tomorrow for a conference doubleheader against Piedmont starting at noon.
