Proposed projects would extend sidewalks to AES or Johnson Park

Walking and running could get safer on Stanley Avenue and Lindsey Bridge Road, or on Moore Road from Andalusia Elementary down Snowden to Dunson Street, if the council successfully pursued grant funding for more sidewalks.

Jeremy McMath of Civil Southeast Engineering presented the two proposed projects to the Andalusia City Council Tuesday, explaining that the projects were eligible for grant funding through the state.

McMath said both were “very fundable projects,” but said adding a sidewalk from Andalusia Elementary to Dunson Street was more likely to get funded, as it will cross an ATRIP-funded project (repaving South Three Notch), and tie into another DOT-funding project to extend sidewalks from Dunson Street out Prestwood Bridge Road.

McMath estimated the project costs at $430,783, and said the city’s projected cost would be $115,596.

However, McMath said the Stanley Avenue project, which would extend sidewalks from Lindsey Bridge Road past Johnson Park to Beasley Street, as well as down Lindsey Bridge Road to Fourth Street, likely would get more use.

McMath estimated the project costs at $495,795, and said the city’s projected cost would be $132,749.

The council took no action, but said it would make a decision by its April 15 meeting.

In other business, the council:

• Agreed to participate in the state’s School Sales Tax holiday in August.

• Announced it is accepting applications for two seats on the Tourism and Relocation Committee.
