Covington County will have a good showing at the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s State Track and Field Meet in Selma this week as several local athletes qualified at the sectional tournament in Tuscaloosa over the weekend.

In the Class 3A sectional, Opp’s Orlando Lacey won the 100 and 200-meter dash; Greg House placed fourth in the 400-meter dash; Derek Savage won the discus; Jonathan Hines won the 300-meter hurdles; Saquaya Lane placed third in the discus; and the boys finished third in the 4×100 meter relay and seventh in the 4×400 meter relay.

“I’m very pleased with their effort,” OHS coach Brian Dickerson said. “They just continue to progress and get better each week. Hopefully, we’ll peak this week and bring home another championship. They have a really good chance.”

Lacey, House, Savage, Hines and Lane will compete at the state meet this week.

In the Class 1A competition, Red Level’s John Lee finished fourth out of 35 in the 200-meter run, and Wesley Holley finished fifth out of 38 in the shot put for state berths.

RLS coach David Godwin said both did well at the sectional and have a lot of “potential” in the future.

“Wesley threw the shot put the farthest he’s thrown all year,” Godwin said. “John, as a ninth grader, had to run against a lot of upperclassmen.

“Both have worked hard and have a bright future,” he said

Additionally, Holley ran the 200-meter and finished 20th out of 40; and Lee ran the 100-meter and finished 10th out of 40.

Florala’s Ray Hall finished second in the long jump event and earned state berth.

The top four finishers in each sectional event advance to the state meet, which will be held Friday and Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Selma.
