Lawson State head women’s coach Aubrey Wiley needed a post player real bad, and Andalusia coach Brad Garner had the answer — Lady Bulldogs senior Shandricka Thompkins.

Thompkins signed a basketball scholarship with LSCC Friday morning in the high school’s heritage room.

The senior said that it felt more “exciting” than anything to put pen on paper to make it official.

“I really tried my best to go to the next level,” Thompkins said.

After running into the LSCC coach at an Alabama State University game earlier this season, Garner said Wiley told him that he needed a post player.

“I said I got one for you,” Garner said.

Thompkins started playing basketball as a freshman at AHS under former coach Bennie Shellhouse.

It wasn’t until her sophomore year that she felt like she played her best ball, Thompkins said.

“Shellhouse put in a lot of work, and so did coach Garner (for my senior year),” she said.

Thompkins said she’s excited about being able to play in the Magic City this coming fall.

“It should be adventurous,” she said.

Thompkins is the daughter of Lakeshia Suggs of Andalusia.
