Straughn junior Brooks Rabren shot a 1-under par 71 to qualify as an individual for the Class 3A state golf tournament in sub-state action Monday at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery.

As a team, the Tigers failed to qualify by finishing one shot higher than Lauderdale County, who went in the club house with a 321. The top three teams — Bayside Academy (293), Trinity Presbyterian (311) and LCHS — along with Rabren, advance to the state round at Capitol Hill Country Club on May 12-13.

Straughn’s Keegan Compton shot a 78; Austin Noland shot a 85; Bryan Barnes shot a 88; and Johnathon Smith shot a 91.

In the Class 4A sub-state tournament at Lagoon Park, Andalusia junior Cal McCalman shot a 86 to finish fourth, just one place from advancing to the state round.

McCalman, who shot a 41 on the front nine, said he could’ve cut a few strokes on the back nine.

“I had fun,” McCalman said. “I guess that’s what matters. I played solid on the front nine. On the back nine, it was pretty tough and tight. I missed a few putts.”

Opp’s Avery Stanfield shot a 80 to lead the Bobcats. Tyler Thompson had a 91, Bradley Cassady had a 84 and Clay Lolley shot a 86.
