The Covington County Board of Education hired a curriculum and professional development supervisor, three coaches, and a band director, as well as other positions, in their meeting Tuesday night.

Susie Nicole Guilford as curriculum and professional development supervisor at the central office.

Guilford currently is the assistant principal at Pleasant Home School.

Superintendent Shannon Driver said Guilford previously taught at Straughn Elementary.

“She is well respected by the faculty and administration,” Driver said. “She has a big job ahead of her, but it’s a good hire for us.”

The board also hired:

• Callie Marie Henderson as band director at Florala High School. Principal Brent Zessin said he had 28 applicants for the job, which opened when Josh Sheffer resigned to accept a teaching position in Andalusia.

Zessin said, “She’s a Smalltown, USA, girl. She went to Lincoln, Ala. She’s familiar with rural Alabama and lives in country. She’s tickled pink to be here, and will hit the ground next week running.”

• Carmen L. Powell as bus driver for the Florala area.

• Crystan Faith Johnson as special education teacher at Florala High School. Johnson is a new teacher, and also will help coach volleyball, basketball and softball.

• Joseph Troy Turman as math teacher and basketball coach at Pleasant Home School.

• Jessica Johns Gibson as physical education teacher at Pleasant Home School. Principal Craig Nichols said she is a PHS grad who has been coaching at Kinston. She will assist with coaching girls basketball and volleyball, and will be the head softball coach.

• Rachel Caroline Turman as a fifth grade teacher at Pleasant Home School.

• Richard D. Mercer as general social science and assistant football coach at Pleasant Home School. Mercer comes to PHS from Mobile County.

• Ashley Wright as elementary teacher at Red Level Elementary School.

• Barry Stanford Wood as an administrator at the central office/general social science teacher at Straughn Middle School. Wood, who previously was an assistant principal at Red Level, has been on active duty with the military.

The board also accepted the resignations of:

• Savanna Youmans Jones, elementary teacher at Red Level Elementary.
