Jud Owens hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to help lead Opp to a 3-2 victory over East Montgomery in the first round of the Alabama Dixie Majors 2014 State Tournament in Selma on Thursday.

Owens hit his bomb deep to left-center field, where the center fielder tried to rob the ball, but it hit the fielder’s glove and went over the fence.

The Bobcats trailed EM 2-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning before they tied it up on DaKota King’s hit with two outs to help send the game into extra innings.

What really propelled Opp over East Montgomery was a another good pitching performance from Russell Moseley.

Moseley pitched seven innings and allowed two unearned runs.

“He started off well and we had a couple errors behind him with those unearned runs,” Opp Majors coach Holt Parker said. “He settled in and around the third and fourth inning, he put it in cruise control and got through to the seventh.”

Ethan Davis came in in relief of Moseley in the top of the eighth and quelled any runs EM thought it was going to score.

Because he was the pitcher of record, Davis earned the win not the mound, and Moseley got the no decision.

“Russell’s pitching and Jud’s walk-off home run were the key to the win,” Parker said. “It was just a good performance by Russell. He pitched a great game, and he kept us in it.”

Opp advances to play Bellingrath at 3 p.m. today in the winner’s bracket semifinals.
