The City of Florala is now accepting bids for a new trash provider after announcing the current provider, Republic Services, will not extend its contract past Sept. 30.

During Monday’s regular city council meeting, Mayor Robert Williamson said the city’s current provider has been under contract since 1993, but reported they would be unable to renew the contract under its current conditions.

“Based on the current costs of serving Florala they cannot renew the contract,” Williamson said. “I’m told that because of the consumer price index, over the next three years – even if they increased their price to the maximum – they would not be making money.”

Williamson said that does not mean Republic Services could not join in the new bidding process, which will begin taking sealed bids from interested parties between now and Fri., Aug. 8 at 5 p.m.

The bids will be opened at the council’s regular meeting on Mon., Aug. 11.
