Florala, Opp are STAR winnersPublished 12:00am Wednesday, July 23, 2014
Florala and Opp will be honored by the Alabama High School Athletic Association as two of 100 state high schools that were fine and ejection free during the 2013-14 sports calendar year at the seventh annual STAR Sportsmanship Luncheon on Friday.
FHS is a part of Class 1A, which had the most schools ejection and fine free with 28. In Class 3A, Opp was one of 17 schools.
This is the seventh year that Learning Through Sports CEO Brian Shulman, the developer of the AHSAA’s landmark STAR Sportsmanship Program, has sponsored the Sportsmanship Luncheon held annually during the AHSAA Summer Conference and All-Sports Week, according to a press release.
Media partner, the Alabama Media Group (AL.com), has awarded eight ejection and fine free schools – one from each district – a $1,000 grant each year since 2008.
The group will announce the 2013-14 recipients at Friday’s luncheon – bringing the total to 56 schools and $56,000 awarded.
