Health officials said Wednesday they have not yet received the final test results to determine if a local man died of a meningococcal disease.

Early signs indicated a 46-year-old local man died of a bacterial disease Monday. Family members said he coded and died after going to the emergency room at Andalusia Regional Hospital with severe, virus-like symptoms.

Alabama Department of Public Health officials said Tuesday that neisseria meningitis, the suspected disease, is transmitted from person-to-person, not in water.

Test results could be available as early as today, Thurs., Aug. 7.
