Straughn senior Brooks Rabren lost 4-3 in match play on Friday in the 14th annual State Match Play Championship at Cherokee Ridge Country Club in Union Grove.

Rabren’s finish gave him a spot in the Round of 16. He lost to Decatur’s Matthew Gourgeot.

From the start of the match, Rabren was 1-up after parring the first hole. The match went all square by the sixth, where Gourgeot made birdie and Rabren settled for par.

Gourgeot went ahead on the par-three eighth hole with a birdie.

By No. 10, the match went back to all square when Rabren put in a birdie on the par-five hole.

Gourgeot then made a birdie on No. 12 and Rabren made bogeys on 13 and 14 to eventually fall 4-3. The match was conceded on N. 15.

In the Round of 32, Rabren defeated Patrick Newsom of Decatur, and beat Harvest’s Terry Aiken 5-3 in the first round.
