An LBWCC honor society has been recognized as a Top 100 chapter among nearly 1,300 chapters worldwide, officials said Wednesday.

The Alpha Beta Eta (ABE) Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa previously earned recognition as a Five-Star Chapter at the organization’s annual convention held in April, and Chapter Adviser Heather Owen was recognized as a Continued Excellence Adviser.

“We are thrilled with this recognition,” Owen said. “The students worked really hard on their project and this recognition is a reflection of their diligence and commitment.”

The ABE Chapter will also receive recognition in the Honors in Action and Honors in Action Theme categories.

Phi Theta Kappa Executive Director and CEO Dr. Rod Risley applauded the work of the Alpha Beta Eta Chapter and extended congratulations to the chapter and college.

“The Alpha Beta Eta Chapter will receive recognition for their achievement at the upcoming Alabama Regional Meeting, being held this fall,” he said.

The Hallmark Awards Program, which reflects the scholarly ideals of Phi Theta Kappa, serves to recognize superior individual and chapter achievement in Society programs.

The awards, based on competitively-judged applications, recognize individuals, chapters and regions for excellence in the Society’s Hallmarks of Scholarship, Leadership, Service and Fellowship as exemplified through Honors in Action activities.

The Honors in Action Theme Award recognizes chapters whose Honors in Action Project Award entries scored highest in each of the 10 themes related to the 2012/2013 Honors Study Topic, “The Culture of Competition.” The Alpha Beta Eta Chapter won a theme award in the category “Competition and the Arts.”

The Honors in Action Project Award recognizes the top chapters whose Honors in Action Project entries demonstrated excellence in academic research into the Honors Study Topic, leadership roles and leadership development activities, service learning and collaboration.

Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Miss., is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,285 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, plus Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, Peru, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions. Nearly 3 million students have been inducted since its founding in 1918, with approximately 131,000 students inducted annually.
