Straughn High School senior Brooks Rabren recently signed with the University of South Alabama to play golf.

Rabren has been playing golf nearly his entire life, and said he is excited for the opportunity to play at the next level.

“I played my first round of golf with my dad when I was 18 months old, and I played my first competitive round when I was 9,” Rabren said.

Rabren said that they expect big things next year at South Alabama.

“I’m really excited. South Alabama has built a great program down there, and we had a really good recruiting class this year,” Rabren said. “There are high expectations for us next year.”

Rabren had his best tournament round this past summer at Quail Ridge Country Club in Memphis, where he shot a 64.

“Brooks is a self-made golfer with God-given talent that he has used to the best of his ability,” said Straughn golf coach Mike Kelly. “I’ve seen three or four golfers in my time here that had the natural ability that Brooks has, but most seem to squander it. Brooks has so much self discipline, and he always takes the necessary steps to get where he needs to.”

Rabren won the state title for individuals two years ago and was state runner-up last year.

“We are so very proud of him for using his God-given ability like he has,” said his mother, Kim Rabren.
