The Florala Wildcats’ eighth grade boys team was too much for the Red Level Tigers to overcome, falling 31-12 in the opening round of the Covington County junior varsity tournament in Straughn.

The Wildcats pounced out front 14-2 in the first period, and never checked up.

At the end of the first half the Wildcats extended their lead to 19-6.

By the time the third period came to an end the Wildcats’ lead had grown to 25-8.

The Tigers kept on fighting despite the score, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Wildcats’ hot start.

Leroy Mitchell was the Wildcats’ leading scorer with 12 points. Caleb Wood tacked on 9 points for the Wildcats.

“We came out and secured the gameplan well,” Wildcats’ head coach Troy Stewart said. “We had to throw some stuff together today since we didn’t get a chance to practice all last week, and Wednesday we face a tough Fleeta team.”

The Tigers’ Kade Green and Chance Russell led their team with 4 points each.

“Florala is big and quick,” Tigers’ head coach Allen Catrett said. “We have to handle what we can control a lot better like getting into the correct position, better passing, and boxing out. If you want to win ball games you have got to make shots.”

Florala will play Fleeta on Wednesday at 3:30 in Straughn in the semi-finals of the Covington County junior varsity tournament. The winner will play Pleasant Home Thursday in the championship game.
