The Straughn Tigers’ junior varsity was too big and quick for the Red Level Tigers, rolling to a 40-8 win Monday night in Red Level.

Straughn got off to a hot start, jumping out front, 18-0, in the first period. Straughn’s Daylan Grant dropped in 8 points in the period.

Straughn would go on a 24-0 run, before Red Level got on the board in the second. At halftime, Straughn held a comfortable 30-2 lead. Anthony Harrell accounted for 5 points, including a long 3-pointer, for Straughn.

The third period started with Harrell swiping three straight balls, and turning them all into Straughn baskets. Harrell was responsible for all 6 Straughn points in the period. After three periods, Straughn led 36-5.

In the fourth, Straughn was able finish off Red Level 40-8. Red Level’s Billy Wright knocked down a long 3-point shot, showing Red Level still had some fight left in them.

Wright led the Red Level Tigers with 5 points.

Harrell was Straughn’s leading scorer with 11 points, and Grant had 8 points.

“I thought we played pretty well tonight, but Red Level was playing with kids that were mostly seventh and eight graders,” Straughn coach Scott Gafford said. “Most of our kids are in the ninth and tenth grade, and those two years make a big difference. Red Level will have a good group when these kids grow up. We did a nice job tonight running our zone offense, and we shot the ball well. One thing we need to work on is to get in the right positions on offense.”
