Hank Peeples pops a 3-pointer against T.R. Miller.

Hank Peeples sizzled from behind the arc to propel the junior varsity Straughn Tigers to a 47-37 victory over the T.R. Miller Tigers Monday night in Straughn.

Peeples got Straughn off to hot start with two 3-pointers in the first period, and at the end of the first Straughn led 14-3. Hayden Atkinson accounted for all of Miller’s points in the first. Straughn also got points from Allan George, Kevin Heiken and Kade Grant.

Straughn continued to use the 3-ball with Peeples draining another from downtown in the second period. Miller got solid shooting effort from the foul line out of Darius Williams, who went 4-for-4 in the second. Heiken added 2 more points to his total in the second. At halftime, Straughn led Miller 20-10.

Peeples continued to put a clinic on for the visiting Tigers with a pair long range 3-pointers in the third period. Heiken hit two buckets for 4 points to help give Straughn a 36-20 lead heading into the final period.

Miller started to get a little offense going in the final period, but clutch free throw shooting down the stretch, from Straughn, led to a Straughn victory. Anthony Harrell and Matthew Worley each went 2-for-2 from the line. Peeples added his sixth 3-pointer of the contest to lift Straughn to a 47-37 win.

Miller’s leading scorer was Williams with 10 points. James Jennings had 9 points.

Peeples led Straughn with 20 points and Heiken finished with 10 points.

“We played well on defense, and we rebounded better tonight,” Straughn coach Scott Gafford said. “We were more physical, but we still need to run the press better. The kids gave a great effort tonight. I was proud of their effort.”
