Willie Ester Holmes

1226-Holmes-obit-webFuneral services for Sister Willie Ester Holmes will be held at 11 a.m. Sat., Dec. 27, 2014, at First Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church.

A public viewing will be held Friday from 4 to 6 p.m. at Kirk’s Funeral Chapel. A viewing will be held at the church one hour prior to services the day of the funeral. Kirk’s Funeral Chapel is in charge in all arrangements.

Sister Holmes was born in Covington County, Ala., on March 6, 1917, the ninth of 11 children. She was the daughter of Mr. Willie J. Bradley, Sr. and Mrs. Winnie Turk Bradley. Sister Holmes attended school in the Covington County School System. She joined First Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church at an early age.

She was united in holy matrimony with Mr. Clarence Davis. To this union two sons were born: James and A. C.  She later moved to Detroit, Mich.; while there she attended New Bethel Baptist Church under the Late Rev. C. L. Franklin’s pastoral care.

She met and married Elijah Holmes in Detroit. They relocated back to Andalusia in the mid 1960s. They joined First Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church, serving as Deacon and Deaconess. Sister Holmes served faithfully until her health began to fail in 2012.

Sister Holmes was a member of Briggs Beauty Chapter #580 O.E.S’ for more than 76 years, serving as treasurer for more than 40 years. She resigned her position April 14, 2012.

Sister Holmes was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, six sisters; a son – A.C. Davis; husbands: Mr. Clarence Davis and Mr. Elijah Holmes. She leaves to cherish her memory one son, James A. Davis (Charleta); two granddaughters, Angeletta Wynn- New Castle, Del., Theresa Riley (Joel) of Newark, Del.; a grandson, James A. Davis, Jr. (Amanda) of New Castle, Del.; 10 great- grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and four godly daughters: Foustine Yancey, Pauline Lewis, Mattie Fort and Veronica Wilkins.

The family gratefully acknowledges and sincerely appreciate the many acts of love and kindness that have been extended to them. Special thanks to Dr. J. F. Maddox and his staff, as well as the administration, social workers, nurses and staff of Andalusia Manor.

 

Carolyn Baker O’Neal

Mrs. Carolyn Baker O’Neal, age 86, of Andalusia died Mon., Dec. 22, 2014, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sat., Dec. 27, 2014, in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Fred Karthaus and the Rev. Jim O’Neal officiating. Interment will follow in River Falls Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.

Mrs. O’Neal is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Anne O’Neal and James White of Olympia, Wa.; son and daughter-in-law, th Rev. Jim and Karen O’Neal of Chatom, Ala.; eight grandchildren, Sara (Jamie) Foster, Erin (Donnie) Moss, Rebecca O’Neal, Elizabeth (Christopher) Barr, Megan (Corey) Baypo, Margaret (Stan) Phillips, Jennifer (Dan) Keeffe, and Christopher (Amanda) White; 14 great grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Lyra and Julian Boyd of Enterprise; sister-in-law, Sara Baker of Perry, Ga.; and brother-in-law, Bart Gowan of River Falls.

Quinton R. McCormick

Quinton R. McCormick, age 81, of Red Level died Tues., Dec. 23, 2014, at Andalusia Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be held today at 11 a.m., on Fri., Dec. 26, 2014, in Foreman Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Wayne Sharpe officiating. Special music will be performed by Amy Jeter. Interment will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m., prior to services at Foreman Funeral Home.

Mr. McCormick is survived by his wife, Josephine McCormick of Red Level; brother and sister-in-law, Donald and Janice McCormick of Red Level; sister, Mildred Currie of Columbus, Ga; and several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents, Helon Ingram and Oscar McCormick; brothers, Larry, Ronnie, Lister, Jones, Lamar, Henry, and Barnes McCormick; and sisters, Gray Pilgreen and Augusta Smith.

Pallbearers will include: Nathan McCormick, Robert Wright, Lee Nall, Monty Jeter, Chuck Jeter, and Jeff Jeter.
