The Straughn Tigers B-team held off the Ashford Yellow Jackets for a 51-40 victory Tuesday night in Straughn.

 

The Yellow Jackets were up at the end of the first period 15-13. Daylan Grant had 7 points for the Tigers in the first, including going 3-for-3 from the free-throw line. Hank Peeples added 4 points for the Tigers.

 

It remained a tight ballgame with the Yellow Jackets up 22-21 going into halftime. The Tigers had a chance to tie the game just before half, but they failed to convert on a free-throw attempt. Matthew Worley and Allen George had 4 points each in the second period for the Tigers.

 

The Tigers turned it up a notch after halftime, and took a 40-28 lead into the final period. Ethan Wilson hit two consecutive 3-pointers that put the Tigers up 34-26 with just over a minute left in the third period. Wilson’s 12-point third period helped the Tigers outscore the Yellow Jackets 19-6 in the period. Worley had 3 points in the period.

 

The Tigers continued to play well in the final period, and went out to secure a 51-40 victory. George had 4 points in the final frame for the Tigers, and Kevin Heiken had 4 points.

 

Wilson led the Tigers with 12 points, and George finished the contest with 11 points.

 

“We weren’t too good in the first half, but we were a lot better in the second half,” Tigers’ coach Scott Gafford said. “ We had guys really step up for us tonight. We did a good job breaking the press tonight, and being able to score when we broke the press really helped us out. We still have to get more physical, though.”
