The Andalusia City Council on Tuesday appointed Jim Smith to a second six-year term on the Utilities Board.

Smith, who was the CEO of Southeast Alabama Gas District before his retirement, was general manager of an operation in Fitzgerald, Ga., much like the city’s before coming to Andalusia.

In other business, the council:

• Assessed abatement costs of $116.86 for work done on an empty lot on Boutwell Street.

• Briefly discussed, at the request of Councilman Terry Powell, whether the council might amend its ordinance prohibiting the sale of fireworks in the city. Powell said he’d had a request from a constituent.

Council members agreed there is too much potential danger in the storage of fireworks to consider a change.
