Lurleen B. Wallace Community College is celebrating its golden birthday this year, and with it comes a “Golden Gala” celebration.

“During the College’s first 50 years, the impact on people’s lives in this community is evident through many first-generation college graduates and skills training for jobs,” said Foundation President SalLee Sasser-Williams. “Whether or not you are a graduate of LBW or MacArthur State Technical College, you most likely have a family member or friend who benefited from the educational opportunities. The ‘Golden Gala’ is meant to celebrate all the successes and the impact of the college for all of us in the area.”

The event is set for April 16, and will include a live band, Sasser-Williams said.

“The gala will be a fun evening with dinner and dancing. There will be a silent auction and an ‘alumni corner,’ so we are hoping to have a large showing of alumni at the event.”

The Golden Gala will be held at the Kiwanis Community Center in Andalusia. Entertainment by the Hotwire band is sure to be a crowd-pleaser since it is composed of former members of the legendary Tip Tops and continues the tradition of a great live band, she said.

Hotwire has multiple vocalists, a “kickin’ rhythm section,” and the awesome “Hotwire Horns,” combining for a packed dance floor all evening.

The night’s agenda includes a social hour and alumni corner starting at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m.  The band begins at 7:30 p.m. with dancing until 10:00 p.m.

Meanwhile, a silent auction runs from 5:30-9 p.m., with the winning bids announced at 9:15 p.m.

Tickets are now available through Feb. 28 for the early-bird price of $50. On March 1, tickets are $60 each. Purchases can be made with check, cash, or with credit card. Tickets are available from any board member, at LBWCC in Andalusia and Opp, Andalusia Area Chamber of Commerce, Opp Chamber of Commerce, or by calling 334-881-2293.

“Although this is not a black-tie event, attire is anywhere from Sunday dress to sequins,” said Sasser-Williams. “There will also be an arm band fee of $25 for the evening for those who would enjoy adult beverages.”

The fundraising goal is $50,000 to honor each of LBWCC’s five decades of higher education. Board members are actively seeking sponsors and are depending on the community’s help in reaching the goal.

“These funds are used by the Foundation for student scholarships and other programs to support LBWCC. Even if you cannot attend the event, we encourage you to help us meet our fundraising goal for this once-in-a-lifetime celebration.
