Residents of the Mason Subdivision overwhelmingly voted to have their neighborhood annexed into the City of Andalusia earlier this week.

The annexation method used started with a petition signed by a minimum of 60 percent of the property owners requesting to bring the issue before the council. The council then agreed and asked Probate Judge Ben Bowden to have a special election.

Voting was held from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Tuesday, and the annexation was approved by a 74 percent margin, 18-7. Any registered voter residing in the proposed annexation area could vote.

“It’s a good thing when people are asking to come into the city,” Mayor Earl Johnson said. “They will now have our fire protection, garbage service, police protection, and their ISO rating will come down.”

There are 16 parcels of property, all fronting on Benvalen Avenue, in the subdivision.
