The Brooklyn Road was closed while law enforcement dealt with a potentially deadly situation Monday afternoon.

A Covington County man with a gun who gave himself up without incident on the Brooklyn Bridge Monday afternoon could be charged with attempted murder in Conecuh County today.

Conecuh County Sheriff Randy Brock said Benjamin Jones, of Red Level, was taken into custody by the Covington County Sheriff’s Office after he fled from his white Ford F-150 into the woods, which was parked under Brooklyn Bridge.

Brock said the incident started in the Paul Community in Conecuh County, where his deputies responded to a “shots fired” call during a domestic disruptance.

“By the time we got there, the subject (Jones) fled to Covington County,” Brock said. “We called the Covington County Sheriff’s Office for assistance, and asked them to put together a team. He was captured on Brooklyn Bridge Road.”

CCSO Sheriff Dennis Meeks said Jones was “highly intoxicated.”

Meeks confirmed that the man did have a gun, but the caliber wasn’t known.

At the time, Brock said he didn’t know if Jones was threatening to kill himself or others as he hadn’t seen any of his officers’ reports relating to the incident last night. Later last night, he said charges are expected.

“I do know that he was parked under the bridge and went into the woods,” Brock said.

Brock said that CCSO deputies captured Jones.

“They did an awesome job,” he said.

About a mile away from the bridge, the Andalusia Police Department, the CCSO and the Alabama State Troopers manned a road block, not letting anybody go near the bridge.

Meeks said the county’s Instant Response Team responded to the scene, but was called off five minutes later when the man gave himself up.
