If Opp Mayor John Bartholomew, the Chamber of Commerce and Trailmasters have their way, Frank Jackson State Park will be the place to be this summer.

Bartholomew said at Thursday’s council work session that the city is working with the other groups to bring revenue and people to the park.

“We want our park to be as active as Mobile,” Bartholomew said.

In April, state parks officials announced that Frank Jackson was among 15 parks that could close if legislators passed a proposed general fund budget.

Bartholomew said the summer event will hopefully feature swimming with lifeguards, blow up bouncy houses, rides, a concession stand and more.

“It will be a place where kids can go and their parents can drop them off,” he said. “There will be snacks and food available.”

Bartholomew said white sand has already been brought in.

“We are just trying to create revenue to keep the park open,” he said. “They will hopefully add a zipline later.”

Bartholomew previously said that the park is an important part of the Opp community and the local economy.

“Losing this park would be like losing an industry,” he said. “People who stay at Frank Jackson spend money at our grocery stores, gas stations, buy fishing equipment, eat at our restaurants and just enjoy our city. This is very important to our city.”
